Camp Rainbow History After visiting a seriously ill child in the hospital, whose one wish was to go to summer camp, Allen Brockman of St. Louis set out to make this child’s dream a reality. Their vision was realized with the birth of Camp Rainbow. In the summer of 1988, that child enjoyed a unique outdoor camping experience along with 27 other seriously ill youngsters. At that time, the camp was held at the Lion’s Den in Imperial, MO, staffed entirely by volunteer counselors, and with the support of the Dream Factory, the American Cancer Society and the NFTY Missouri Valley youth group. In 1992, Camp Rainbow relocated to its current facility at Babler Outdoor Education Center in Wildwood, MO., and is held for one week each June. What is Camp Rainbow? Camp Rainbow provides seriously-ill children ages 4-18 with the opportunity to enjoy a week-long summer camp experience in a safe, non-threatening environment. Our goal is to allow each child to participate in all the exciting camp activities, while being free of the everyday stress caused by their illness. A full medical staff provides each camper with any immediate or ongoing care they may need while at Camp Rainbow. The Camp Rainbow Foundation, its donors and sponsors cover all costs for Camp Rainbow. 100% of every dollar raised for Camp Rainbow goes directly towards creating and providing a quality experience for each camper.
